“He was only seven years, 269 days old when he died. But he taught me about being a man. Even though he was only a boy. I can tell you that because of meeting Chris, I am an entirely different man. Ron Cox said the same thing. He said he didn’t fear death anymore, Because he knew Chris would be there waiting for him,” said Tommy Austin, one of the founders of the Make A Wish foundation. Chris had been diagnosed with leukemia. His biggest wish: “to catch bad guys” with Austin. Not only had Austin fulfilled that wish, but he felt a wave of fulfillment and satisfaction of his own.
A trio from Highland Park High School will be organizing something similar. Justin Ching, Louise Lu, and Rachel Powlen, members of the HPHS DECA Club, will be supporting Make A Wish by holding a walk. The Make A Wish Hallow Walk allows you to ,”skip class and walk around the track with your friends for a minimum of $10 on the 27th of October during Period 3! There will also be a Most Spirited Contest, and a bunch of fun relay races,” according to Rachel Powlen ‘20.
Many of you might be thinking, That’s great and all, but why should I participate in the walk? I’m so lazy. Justin Ching ‘19 responds” I am definitely not someone who goes out of my way to do work. However, this is a fun event that involves doing something nice for other people. My response is why not?” All the benefits add up. You get to skip class for a period, have fun with your friends, and accumulate good karma. An anonymous teacher chimed in,” You will also be burning calories! A lot of walking around the track!” Other students might be thinking I’d love to help the cause, however I can’t miss that class period? In that case, there are many other options available including donating, encouraging friends to sign up for the walk, etc.
Other then the burning of calories, I think it’s important to remember that everyone has a master wish that they hope to fulfill before their last breath becomes solely air. Perhaps we will burn calories. Perhaps we can find a source of inspiration in the happiness and change that Austin, and this trio, will surely unlock. However, through participating we will definitely make a child’s last wish come true. Come out and support the cause on October 27th!
